Yané

(with Bonus Handmaiden)

My “army” of Naboo Royal Handmaidens is finally complete! Yané is made basically the same way as my other Handmaidens, Saché, Rabé, and Eirtaé. The body and guns are, of course, from Episode I Queen Amidala (Naboo). For variety’s sake, I replaced Admiala’s bun with the lovely long hairdo of Episode I Padmé Naberrie; this required cutting off part of Amidala’s head and doing some filling-in with Sculpey. I then repainted the hair dark brown, and painted "mud" and weathering on the figure in the same way as on Saché and Rabé. I tried to get some on her long hair as well, but it didn’t turn out very well.

There aren’t many picture references of Yané, since she’s one of the least visible of the Handmaidens in Episode I. Thus I wasn’t sure what to do with her hair at first. I decided to make it long, dark, and luscious based on a picture of Candice Orwell, the model who protrays Yané, seen at a website very aptly named the elusive yané.

Bonus Handmaiden

After finishing Yané, I had made all the Naboo Royal Handmaidens not already made by Hasbro (i.e. not including Sabé or Padmé Amidala), but I still had an extra Queen Amidala (Naboo) on hand, a gift from none other than A. Nonymous himself. Thus I decided to make one more, just for the heck of it. I gave her the head from POTF2 Slave Leia with the braid removed, and using a tiny rubber band (the kind used with braces) as an O-ring to make her neck the proper length. Then I added a short bob hairdo with Sculpey, and painted the hair “leather” (Testors Model Master Acryl). That was pretty much all there was to it.

I wasn’t sure what name to give this Handmaiden, since all the canonical ones from Episode I were used up. After some deliberation, however, I decided I’d dub her “Jaina Solo in Naboo Royal Handmaiden Costume,” since it ended up looking kind of like some Jaina Solo customs I’ve seen. Maybe she’s dressed up for some sort of historical re-creation or the Star Wars universe’s equivalent of the Society for Creative Anachronism. If anyone else has a possible backstory or explanation they like better, please let me know what it is -- I’m e-mailable at findswoman at netscape dot net. Imagination, my friends!
